Number 5 is on the way! Here's why!

Yes you read right, we are once again expecting another baby and we are thrilled!!   This will be our 5th child. I'm due May 20th and so far everything is going perfectly . Before anyone asks yes this baby was planned . All of our children have been planned, although Andrew was a surprise we still wanted him and I cannot imagine life with out him . Andrew was planned by God and that's more than enough !  We have always had our babies close together and enjoy a close spacing . Our largest spacing has been 23 months and shortest 13 months and 4 days . There will be about 17 1/2 months in between my youngest and the new baby .  From my experience having them close together is easier , not harder .


A lot of people want to know why, why so many babies. I hear so often "is this one your last?", "don't you know how that happens?", "how many do you want anyway?", "don't you know what birth control is?"   "how can you afford them? You must be on welfare", " how will you pay for all those college educations?" "how are  you ever going to be able manage to care for them and give them the attention they need?" "When's the last time you slept through the night?" And sadly those are the nicer of the comments. For some reason when you have a larger than average family people think it's their job to dig into your personal life, ask in depth questions that are none of their business. I would never go up to a mother of two and ask them if all their children had the same father.People are just plain hateful and rude.  So to answer a few of the nicer questions I decided to write this blog because in a sense I'm tired of repeating myself. It may be a long blog so prepare yourself.

Question #1 Why so many babies? 
There are many reasons. One reason being that I have always wanted a big family because I wanted my kids to have a larger support system then what I have . I am from a traditional 2 child family . My Dad passed away 4 years ago , when My Mom and step dad are called home to heaven all I will have is my brother who isn't married and has no children. I have pretty much no other family close . All of my family is 1,000 miles away at the least .  I want my kids to have a large support system ,  I want different for my children, I want a big family .

We choose to believe what the Bible and God say about children, not what society says about children.  Society says children are a burden, a hindrance to living a good life, that you won't be able to do anything,  that children cost so much that you have to be rich to have more than 2. It seems to be an unspoken rule that you should have a boy and a girl and then stop unless you have 2 boys or 2 girls then you can have a third but no more because anymore than that is a large expense, to much work and a burden .  Kids are suppose to be a huge expense, and you couldn't possibly afford brand new cars, and nice vacations with more than two children. A family with 5 or 6 or more children would be considered to be crazy and people would either be angry with them or feel sorry for them , but on the contrary if you had 5-6 homes, or a huge garage full of 5 or 6 cars you would be considered to be well off, blessed and you must be doing something right with your life. Never mind the fact that things are just possessions you can't take it with you. That the bible says to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. I can take my kids to heaven with me, I can't take all my hard worked for possessions.  They just collect dust and get thrown away. 
The bible says children are a blessing and a reward over and over again. The bible says God provides and he truly has. 
Psalms 127: 3-5 " Behold, Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies at the gate."

My personal favorite is: Psalms 128: 1-6" Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways! You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the Lord. The Lord bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life! "

Proverbs 17:6 "Grandchildren are the crowned glory of the aged, parents are the pride of their children." 

Jeremiah 1:5 " I knew you BEFORE I formed you in your mothers womb. Before you were born I set you apart, and appointed you as the prophet to the nations." 

God says children are a blessing, weather they are your first child or your 15th. All children are a blessing no matter what number they are in the line up. We have wanted every single one of our children. Yes Andrew was a unexpected surprise,  but I wouldn't change it for the world. He wasn't in my plans, but he was in God's. If it was up to me I would have waited another year or so before we got pregnant again, not 5 months. He was meant to be here exactly when he came.  If I would have went off of my plans look at what I would have missed. I would have missed out on a sweet precious little boy who loves his Mama more than anything.  My kids along with every man, woman and child on the face of this earth is here for a purpose. God has something for each of us to do on this earth.  God planned us before the beginning of time. He destined us to live on this earth at this exact time. None of my children are accidents that should have been prevented, they are blessings and they are part of God's plan for my life. The Lord calls us to be living sacrifices, but it never says how that is suppose to happen.  Everyday I pour my life into these kids, I sacrifice for them and give them my all because they are the legacy I leave behind . I won't be here forever, someday Matt and I will be called to our heavenly home. My kids will live on, and what I teach them and how I raised them will live on in them and be passed on to their children and my great grandchildren. My descendents could change the world. I don't know the plans God has for them, they might cure cancer, be the next Billy Graham, or touch peoples lives in a simple way as a plumber or a farmer. Who knows what God will choose to do in them. I'm just glad I get to be a part of it. We choose to put our money, energy and time into something that will last for eternity, and won't collect dust and be thrown away.

Question #2  is the combination question. Is this one your last? Don't you know how that happens? "Don't you know what birth control is?" "how many do you want anyway?" 
My husband gets quite a kick out of the "don't you know how that happens" question and takes it as an opportunity to embarrass the person that asked the question. Usually he responds with "yes and we are pretty good at it" or "no, do you know because we are clueless" or "yes but we figured we must be doing it right because the kids are cute, we will stop when we get an ugly one" . Usually the other person turns a few shades of red, realizes how stupid they were to ask such personal questions" He thinks it's hilarious and rude that random strangers are so concerned with what happens in our bedroom and makes a point to embarrass them. Yes we know how it happens, no we aren't clueless. 

At this point we both feel that this child will be our last, however that may change if both of us change our mind. When we got married we never had a specific number of children we wanted, we have always gone forward with the mentality that we will see how things go, decide one child at a time and we will know when our family is complete . Now goes into the birth control question. No we do not believe in hormonal birth control other wise known at the pill, iud etc. We also don't believe in any permanent measures like tubals or vasectomies . After much prayer we do not feel either is right for us.  I took the birth control pill when we were first married up until we wanted our first and went right back on it after she was born until we wanted our 2nd and after he was born I did the same but there were problems with the birth control that the doctor put me on. It made me very sick, so the doctor changed my birth control. During the change over is when we got pregnant. We were surprised with a positive pregnancy test when Jackson was 6 months old .  Shortly after I found out I was pregnant with Andrew a friend brought up the subject of the birth control being an abortifacient. At first I didn't believe it, and decided to do my own research as to how the pill works. For those who don't know how the pill works is it first prevents ovulation, it thickens cervical mucus making it hard for sperm to get through, and it thins the lining of the uterus to prevent a conceived child from implanting into the uterus lining . If you take the pill perfectly the failure rate is very low, however if your like me and many other women and forget pills for days or take it at different times of the day the failure rate goes up a lot . You can release an egg, it can meet sperm and a child can be conceived but the child can't implant because the uterine lining is to thin so the baby dies causing an abortion or if it does implant the lining is so thin it can't sustain a pregnancy for long so you miscarry. Yes there are times where babies are conceived with birth control and live, but no one knows how many children die because they can't implant into the womb.  I asked my doctor about my findings and he did confirm that what I researched was indeed how it works. In fact the same info is in most of the paperwork that comes with your pill.  IUD's also thin the lining as well . As a Christian we believe life starts at conception and we do not believe in abortion in any shape or form, so we decided the pill was no longer an option for us . During my pregnancy with Andrew I educated myself in natural family planning , my cycles have always been like clockwork so it made it easier.  After he was born in January of 2011 we began practicing natural family planning and have been successful with it ever since. We went over a year before we decided we wanted another child and conceived with in a couple of months. We have done the same since Nathan was born and we both decided in August that we wanted another and got pregnant right away. We joke that I'm fertile myrtle :) As I stated earlier at this time we feel that this will be our last child. However with that being said one of us or both of us may change our mind, or the Lord may decide different. Our perspective has always been that we practice natural family planning to prevent but if the Lord decides to bless us again in his timing we will gladly accept his blessings and his will. God is the author of life , and opens and closes the womb when he see's fit. He know's better than I do and we trust in that. We trust that if he gives another child he will give us the resources, time, energy and patience that are needed to raise another. He has never failed us yet. We have never gone with out, we have always had enough and sometimes there is no doubt that it has come from God. 

Isaiah 55:8-9 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways my ways declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways." 

Question #3: How are you ever going to be able to care for all of them and give them the attention they need? 
When I was pregnant with our 3rd child an older couple in our church approached me and asked me what number this baby was for us. I told her 3, and she said "honey once you have 3 you can handle 10" Turns out she had 8 grown children that were married with children of their own. At the time I thought she was a crazy lady, but I have found her words to be true.There is something that you learn to do when you have more than 2 children. You learn to prioritize who needs attention first, and before you know it you do it without thinking. When we brought home our 4th child there was literally no transition. Other than being a little sore from my c-section everything went on like normal. Matt took one day off work after I came home just to help me get settled and after that I was on my own and it was life as normal. At some point if you add another to the bunch it doesn't make much difference. Also 4 kids is not like having four babies. As they grow up they learn to do alot for themselves, and if you train them young they can be a big help. My kids make their own beds, clean their rooms, help with laundry, help with dinner and dishes and anything else I might ask them to do and most of the time there is no grumbling or complaining. My oldest two are pretty self sufficient as far as caring for themselves, and my almost 3 year old does a lot for himself. The only one that really depends on me for everything is my baby.  As far as time and attention goes. I believe that they myth that you can only give one or two children proper attention is a lie from the devil. It's all about priorities and what matters most to you. For hundreds of years families had more than two kids, all turned out well. My Dad was one of 8 children, I never once heard him say anything about wishing he was from a smaller family because he didn't get enough love and attention. If anyone had a great time as a child it was my Dad.  I have several friends who have 5-15 kids and all of there kids are happy and get plenty of attention. Granted most of them are homeschooling families, but some are not. We are a homeschooling family. I spend 24/7 with our kids, they get lots of love and attention.  They get lots of one on one attention from Mama during school and all through the day.  Matt is here as much as he is able. His job has a very unpredictable schedule. Someday's he's home at 5, other days not until midnight. Some weeks he's home and others he's out of town.  He has busy seasons and then seasons where there is no work. It all evens out, and we make sure to have regular family time and little vacations even if it's just a trip to the mountains or the park  for the day with the kids. As far as sleeping goes. Also most nights I sleep through the night, all of my kids are great sleepers. My problem is just getting to bed before midnight. 

Question #4 How can you afford them? You must be on welfare
Well first of all NO we are not on welfare. My husband works extremely hard, usually he works somewhere around 60 hours or more a week. I work hard to make what we have stretch. If you truly know me you know that I am frugal to an extreme. We buy used clothes and shoes, and yes my kids have nice clothes. Mostly all name brand that I pay 1.00-2.00 at most per clothing item. We are also blessed by friends with lots of hand me downs. We hand down the clothes we do have. My 10 month old son wears the same clothes my soon to be 4 year old wore. If this child is a girl she will wear all of my 5 year old's baby clothes we still have stored away. We buy used toys, or shop sales.  We also hand down toys, and we only buy toys twice a year which is Christmas and birthday's. We cloth diaper when we are home and only spend 30.00 a month in diapers with 2 kids in diapers.  We grow a large garden and I can what we get from that. This year we have canned just a little over 300 jars and that on a slow year. I still have pumpkin to can but that is pretty much it.  That takes a huge chunk out of our grocery bill. I also cook a lot from scratch and we eat leftovers once a week . I can feed our family of 6 for 300 a month easily. At the very most 400 a month but that's  not very often.  We eat out once a week but we know where to go that is budget friendly and most importantly where kids eat free. I have learned how to be frugal out of necessity. There was a time where we had to watch every penny, now that is not so much the case but I do it anyway because being frugal is what has made us be able to live the life we want to. We are working our way out of debt and have less than a year until we are completely out of debt other than our mortgage. We are in better financial shape with 4 soon to be 5 kids than we were when our first child was born. We have savings now, we had nothing when Sarah was born. We were in a ton of debt when we had our first child, now not including our mortgage we have very little debt.
 Our kids don't cost us much to have them, we pay about 1500- 2000 or so after insurance has paid their portion. That's over the course of 9-11 months. Usually that's on co pays and medicine and any tests they won't pay for. In general to raise our kids doesn't cost us much either, clothes and shoes are handed down and what we do buy we don't spend much on. When you have a larger family you learn to cook meals that are budget friendly. We don't have steak, we have spaghetti. We really don't like steak much anyway. We don't eat out every night, and that makes it a treat when we do. We live good lives. our cars aren't brand new but they are dependable and one is paid for and the other soon will be. We have found that our cars drive better when they are paid for. We take vacations, just not extravagant ones. We still have date nights on occasion, and go out for girl time on a normal basis with friends.  My kids never want for anything. 
God has provided a lot for us over the years. God truly has taken care of us! Just in the past six months he has done huge things in our lives. In may our landlords approached us that they wanted to sell us the house . We didn't think it would be possible, but called a mortgage broker that a family member recommended. Turns out we were approved for much more than we needed to buy the house, and for a loan that required zero down. We got a good interest rate, we paid no closing costs and our payments ended up being less than we originally thought it would be. Basically buying our home costed us nothing up front. We have plans drawn up to add on to the house by closing in the garage and making a big laundry room and a classroom for homeschooling. Also we plan on finishing the attic and adding two more bedrooms, a bathroom and bonus room up there. Eventually we will add on a dining room with a wood stove to help with heating costs. Construction begins this spring with the garage, then the attic will follow and in 2-3 years the dining room. When it's all said and done our house will more than double in size, and be more than enough space. In the midst of buying the house Matt was given a much deserved raise, and just recently we were gifted a set a of brand new tires for his truck. My transmission went out in August, we debated  over buying new or keeping our paid for van and fixing it. We decided to fix it but didn't have the money to do it right then and would have to save. At just that time worked really picked up for Matt, he worked lots of late nights sometimes not getting home until 1 or 2 in the morning. In a couple weeks time he made enough money to cover the cost of replacing the transmission. God provided the work so we could fix our van. We have never had to go without, we have seen God move in our lives and provide time and time again. Sometimes it comes in a extra job for Matt, or a big pot of green beans from the garden, a bag of hand me downs from a friend or other times it's come in unexpected gifts from friends or family. I have always believed the saying "God helps those that help them self" and "Opportunity is often disguised as hard work".

Question #5: How will you pay for all those college educations?
For some reason this seems to be the unforgivable sin to some people but we will not be paying for their college degrees. When I was a kid it was made clear to my brother and myself that if we wanted to go to college we were responsible for paying for it and my parents couldn't afford to pay for it. I got scholarships, student loans and made tuition payments. I worked my way through school.  Other than a tank of gas here or there and some help with buying books my Mom didn't pay for my college education. I quit after two years because I honestly didn't know what I wanted to do and didn't want to waste my money.  My brother graduated high school with a 4.0 and got a full ride to the local technical school. He paid nothing for his education. I am a better person for being made to work for my education, it is possible it's just not easy. I think it's a good thing to not give your kids everything. Our kids will work for college, and for their first car. You appreciate things more when you have hard work and sweat in it.  I don't want my kids going to school just because Mommy and Daddy will pay for it, I want them to have a drive to succeed. If they choose not to do the college route that's fine. If they want trade school, just to work,travel or to get married or what ever  they want to do we will support them. I do want them to pursue any learning opportunity they can, and learn to do as much as they can from people in their life. If you are willing usually anyone is willing to teach you how to do something.  College does not always mean success. There are lots of successful people that don't  have degrees. As long as you teach your kids to live within their means they will be successful degree or not.  

We are beyond excited to be expecting again. Sarah is particularly excited because she wants a sister but who knows what will happen.We have had lots of comments from those who know already. The majority of people are happy for us but some are not so pleased. Some people think we already have alot on our plates already.  Yes it is alot of work, but it's also alot of fun the majority of the time. At a certain point one child doesn't change much as far as work load goes.  There is nothing more entertaining than a house full of silly kids. Life is never dull. I wouldn't change it for the world. This life makes me happy. Yes there are bad days, but Mom's with one or two have bad days to. It's bound to happen but the good days outnumber the bad. Just breathe and get through the day and hope tomorrow is better. My pregnancies aren't necessarily easy. I have gestational diabetes, and have had high blood pressure in 2 of 5 pregnancies and this will be my 5th c-section. So far we have 11 weeks and 1 day down, and everything is going very well. The doctor has me on a low dose of medicine for just my fasting blood sugars. Blood pressure is perfect and I'm not having any other issues. The doctor is very pleased. We are hoping for a healthy pregnancy, and a healthy baby. Hopefully I can fulfill Sarah's hopes for a sister but if not we will be happy with another little boy. I wish everyone understood how much of a blessing a child is, especially when you watch your older children love on your baby. This baby is very much wanted, and has already brought our family unspeakable joy.

How I do it

"I don't know how you do it?" I hear it all the time!  Family ,  Friends or complete strangers will see me out at the grocery store , park or where ever and I will hear that comment . If we are at the grocery store I hear "Wow your brave , bringing all these little ones out here , how do you get them to stick with you and behave?"  I also get it when they come over to my house , how do you keep your house so clean with four little ones around, how do find the time to clean ?" When I tell people I homeschool they say "how do you find the time ?" I also hear alot "how do you afford all of them ?"  "How are you ever going to pay for all those college degrees? " My answer is always "It's not as hard as you think, or children aren't expensive lifestyle is".  It's all about schedule , organization and just  going with the flow at times because life is unpredictable .

Anyone that really knows me knows that I have always wanted a big family , I always knew I would have more that the socially acceptable two children , perhaps several more . I grew up in a small family with one brother 4 years younger than me , no cousins that I was particularly close to and no family close by other than my Grandma . We moved from Iowa to South Carolina in 2001 where we have pretty much no family . I did gain a few close friendships here but not many that I weekly spend time with .  All I had was my Mom , Stepdad, my brother and at the time my Grandma was living with us as well .  My Dad was still living in Iowa . My Grandma went home to be with the Lord in January of 2005 . My Dad also went on to his great reward in August of 2009 . That left me we a pretty small family of my Mom , Stepdad and brother . It breaks my heart to think that when my Mom passes all I will have  (other than my husband and children) is my brother and stepdad , neither of which I am not particularly close to .  I have always said I wanted a big family so that my children wouldn't be alone , that they would have a large support system whenever the Lord calls Matt and I home . Also they are lots of fun , life is never boring . I want big family get togethers and a close family . There is also lots of other reasons why I want a big family that I won't go into right now .

People always told me having a large family was a ton of work (which I can see in some aspects) , throw homeschooling all of them into the mix as well a child with many development delays that require weekly therapy and that makes things more complicated .  I was determined that I would do all I could to make it as easy as I could, to make life run relatively smoothly , and to enjoy the time with my kids. So a couple of years ago I read an article about having a large family mindset , learning how people with many children live every day life and not loose their sanity .  This is what I learned: cleaning , baths , cooking , grocery shopping , school and basically everything is on a routine and you must train them young in everything . I don't do schedules because with little ones life is unpredictable , you can't always have nap time at exactly 1:30 somedays it's 1:45 . We try to go in a general  routine everyday .

Bathtimes work like this: Bathnights at our house are Sunday's , Wednesdays , and Friday's . Of course the exceptions are blow out diapers ,  messy dinner  nights etc . I do try to plan messy suppers on bath nights though . Everyone gets a bath on those nights . Usually all the older ones can still fit in the tub , and at their ages they don't care that ones a girl and the other two are boys so it works .The baby gets a bath in the baby bath tub . Matt gives the oldest 3 a bath and I give the baby his bath and help get the other 3 dressed and hair combed . 

Grocery Shopping:  I do a  big trip once a month grocery trip , usually somewhere around the middle of the month because that is the best time to do it financially .  (it seems all of our bills are due at the beginning of the month) I will make one small trip a week for milk/bread/produce that we don't have in our garden and anything else we might need .   Usually I do that on Friday's . Usually by the time the month is over we spend about 300-350 total with all groceries , diapers , cleaning and paper products included. It takes alot of creativity and using what I have to keep the bill that small , but we are able .   I menu plan so their is never any guessing as of whats for dinner . We don't always go day to day by the menu but by the end of the month almost everything on the menu has been eaten . I usually plan for 35 nights worth of meals . If I go with all the kids we only get one buggy .  Andrew goes in the seat in the buggy , Nathan goes inside the buggy in his carrier , Sarah and Jackson walk beside the buggy and hold on to it . I never have any problems with little ones wandering off , putting things in the buggy , or whining because they can't have something. They learn early that they get in big trouble if they throw a fit in the store . I also train them early to stay with me, and behave . They also help bring things in when we get home and help put things away .

Meals: At our house family meals are a big thing . Every night we all eat together , even if that means we eat later than usual because Matt is working late . There is times when he is working very late and he will call and say go ahead and eat but that doesn't happen very often . Family time is important to us , it's something I grew up with and I want my children to have the same thing .  At least one of the kids usually help make dinner every night . And whoever doesn't help cook will help set and clear the table . The other night Jackson helped me make cornmeal pancakes by dumping in all the ingredients , and counting out the sausage links . Sarah put the syrup, butter and plates and silverware on the table and put everything away after dinner was over with . We also color code plates so there is no fighting over "he got my plate". I bought some sectional plates about a year ago at Goodwill . Sarah has purple or pink plates , Jackson has a dark blue and Andrew has kind of green color . When Nathan gets old enough he will probably have orange or yellow . I have thought about doing the same thing for cups so I never have to wonder whose cup is who but I haven't done it yet . Also we don't do picky eaters , if they don't like something they are required to eat at least 3 bites . Usually their is always something on the plate that they do like .  I don't fix special meals for someone (the exception of course would be allergies) , as I was told growing up this isn't a restaurant you eat what's put in front of them or they don't eat . 

Cleaning: Cleaning is done on a schedule at our house . Every afternoon the kids go to one of their bed rooms from about 12:30 to 1:15 to play .  I will get my cleaning done then that I can't do when they are in the way .  In their rooms there is nothing that can get into or get hurt by and I check on them regularly. This is what gets done daily : dishes , vaccuming , sweeping and usually trash . On Mondays : I basically just do my daily chores because that is our busy day . Tuesday's I do all the basics plus dust and clean the windows .Wednesday's I do the basic's plus mopping . Thursday's I do the basics plus clean the bathrooms and clean the windows . Friday's I just do the basics and do any other little things that need done . My house isn't perfect , and I don't want it to be , but it's fairly clean . Their is definate room for improvement .

Daily Outings: I try to only leave the house at most 3 times a week (usually something like Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's .) We will go out alot on the weekends though .  It just helps save on gas and makes it easier to plan homeschooling . If we have to go the store , run errands , doctors appointments or go to the park I always try to go in the mornings and try to be home before 1 .  This just works better for us and lets the kids take a nap in their beds . If they sleep in the van they only get a cat nap and won't nap at home and will be very grumpy . 

School: By South Carolina law homeschooling requires 4 1/2 hour of homeschool time everyday for at minimum 180 days . We plan on homeschooling year round with taking breaks throughout the year. Right now we do those hours throughout the day , sometimes we do school on the weekends if we are doing something educational as a family (if it's educational it counts as school) , somedays we have longer or shorter days than others but in the end it evens out . Right now Sarah and Jackson do a little school in the morning, about 2 hours in the afternoon and a some a night while I'm making dinner . It usually ends up to be about 4 1/2 hours . I try and make things into educational activities . Such as one day last week Sarah was sounding out words on signs while going down the road , she was asking me how to spell certain words and I would say sound it out and she would and almost always get it right . That counts as school time because she is practicing reading and sounding things out . I love homeschooling , it truly is something I'm passionate about doing for my children . Ever since my first child was born it has been something I have want to do .

Paying for the College Degree: The answer is simple , we will not be paying for there college educations . To some people that is the unforgivable sin but let me explain myself . Growing up my Mom made it clear that if I wanted to go to college that I would be paying for it . I did go to college and paid for almost all of it myself . My Mom did help with occasional tank of gas , groceries I might need and she did help me buy my books one semester because I was a couple hundred short but for the most part I paid for it myself . I worked part time and sometimes full time all the way through school .  I did two years , and after several major changes I decided to quit . I truly didn't know what I wanted to do , and in my opinion it was a waste of money to keep taking classes when I wasn't working towards any particular degree . I however went to school with several people who were just their because their parents were paying for it , they would skip class and didn't care what grade they got because they had no investment in their education . Also there is always the people that go to school and get a useless degree that they never use .  If  you are paying for it yourself you are more likely to work hard and not want to waste your money . It is possible to work your way through school . I will however help them through school just as my Mom did for me .  Also I won't force my children to go to college , if they have a desire to do so and want to go for something that is a career that is in need would be worth the investment then I will completely supportive . I will also be supportive of them just getting a job , or getting married or doing whatever they want to do . From personal experience I know that you don't need a college degree to be successful. In our case neither myself or my husband have college degrees . I am a full time stay at home mom but when I did work I made on average 600-700 a week waiting tables , and my husband is an electrician . I did awesome in high school , and did fairly well in college but never graduated .  My hubby barely made it through high school , he hated school and couldn't  wait get out and work . He did graduate , and while he was in high school a friend of the family taught him how to be an electrician . He didn't make much at the time , but it was a learning experience . He went onto other higher paying jobs as an electrician , to the job that he has now making very good money , all without a degree of any kind . Ultimately it's important to teach your children to be hard workers , to teach them to learn how to do  as much as they can , for them to be willing to do whatever it takes to earn a living and most importantly you need to teach them to live within their means and live on LESS than they make .  If you do those things they will be successful ,  degree or not . 

Laundry : I do laundry everyday . I am the type of person that if I only did laundry once or twice a week I wouldn't want to do it because it would be a huge pile . I work better doing 2-4 loads a day rather than spending all day doing it . When I get up I start a load , and work through it through the rest of the day one right after another . Usually I do about 2-4 loads sometimes more just depending . I hang out all my laundry (assuming that it's not raining outside) . I will usually hang it out around 11 in the morning and we will take it off the line around 6:30 in the evening . We fold it and put it in baskets and bring it in the house . The next morning I sort through it and put it away where it belongs . If I don't get to hang it out I either fold in the afternoon while the kids are sleeping or in the evenings . If I do it in the evenings Sarah loves to help fold . 

Toy Clean up and Kids Chores: As soon as my kids can walk they get a job . When they are little it's something simple like throwing away a diaper or helping pick up toys , but as they grow older they get more responsibility . In the morning all the kids are responsible for the cleaning their rooms , Sarah makes her bed and I make the boys beds . If we are staying home in the mornings between 9-11 it's free time . About 11:30 it's clean up time , the rule is at breakfast or lunch time that no breakfast/lunch until everything is cleaned up . I didn't use to have this rule and they would dilly/dally around and take forever to clean up . I started this rule and it's amazing how fast they move when they want something . They will have the house cleaned up in 10 minutes with little to no help from me .  Our theory is if they can make the mess they can help clean it up. They also help with setting the table , put any condiments that we might need on the table , cleaning up afterwards , they help with laundry from time to time , Sarah likes to sweep the kitchen , they put laundry away , they help in the garden picking green beans , carrots and other veggies , they help with some yard work . They put stuff in trash, laundry in  the dirty clothes , unload the dishwasher . They even help change the baby . Sarah gets the outfit , Jackson gets the diaper , I change the diaper and Andrew throws it away . My kids earn their keep , and most of the time they love doing it because they don't know any different . They are taught early to help so it's just part of everyday life for them . We want everyone to help with housework not just Mommy. Our goal is that by the time they leave our home they will know how to run a home and know how to do it all. I would feel like a failure if my college freshman didn't know how to do his/ her own laundry or cook a decent meal. I even want my children to adequately know how to run a sewing machine, change their own oil and do basic car repairs, in this day and time those kind of skills are needed.

Financially: Truly in our case God provides .  Matt works hard and makes a good living but he doesn't make a ton , he usually works about 50 hours a week .  In fact according to the federal government our income for our family size is under the poverty level . With that said we have never had anything shut off , we always have a good meal and never go without , we even have savings . We have a good life , and never go without .  He makes good money but according to how most people are accustomed to living we would be considered poor , but we have learned to live frugally and we feel rich . What clothes and shoes we have to buy for the kids are bought used , most of the clothes we have are given to us . Recently a dear friend gave us 7 grocery bags full of 3 and 4t clothes for the fall so I won't need to buy anything for Jackson for fall. I won't have to buy anything for Andrew either because we pass the clothes down . Nathan wears the same baby clothes that Jackson wore , even though I do buy an occasional "new to us" item for him . I basically only buy for Sarah and Jackson .  We only buy the kids toys twice a year (christmas and birthdays) and even then sometimes they are bought used . If we can we buy used before new . We live frugally by using our garden and canning quite a bit , hanging out our laundry , making our own cleaners , sewing , using cloth diapers and trying our best to not be wasteful with anything . I don't even turn on the heat/air unless I absolutley have to so we can keep the power bill down (down to 103 this month for an all electric house with 2 refridgerators , a deep freezer , washer and dryer and pool , not bad at all). In the spring/summer We just turn on fans , open the windows and if we can't stand it we go outside unless we have to be inside and then I'll turn on the air . Usually if it gets to about 80 in the house then I turn on the air.  In the winter I turn the heat down to 69 and we all wear long sleeves , pants and socks . If your still cold grab a blanket .  There have been so many cases where God has provided work , food , clothes that were given to us , money that we simply just found in a parking lot and not to mention frugal knowledge to make what we are given stretch .  We also pay cash for things , and don't make a habit out of not taking out loans for things . We have been their and done that in the past and it is just one big headache . We paid cash for my van , we will pay cash for the next truck we buy Matt , and any other purchases will be made in cash not on a credit card . Without a doubt God truly fills in the gaps and provides for us ! 

Patience: This is an area I can struggle with , with all little ones there are days that I am running low on patience , and there are days that I just about loose it . I truly have great kids that behave 99. 9 percent of the time, but everyone has bad days .  I truly have to rely on God , I have to every morning get on my face before my savior and ask for the patience that I need , to respond right to all of their little demands , the strength and energy to do all I need to do and to literally think before I speak because words can be hurtful and they do form who a child is . If I try to do it in my own strength 9 chances out of 10 I fail miserably and am exhausted , if I do it in the strength of the Lord it is so much easier . I have to do my best to get into God's word everyday, to be fed spiritually . I also listen to christian radio , and listen to on average 2 hours of preaching on the radio a day . Also my husband is truly a huge blessing to me . I have several friends who say their husband does hardly anything to help them , some peoples husbands don't even change diapers and are afraid to take care of their own children . I am so blessed with a husband that will do anything to help . He changes diapers , does laundry , helps with housework , and he's not afraid to take care of them by himself . We have an arrangement that on a regular basis he will either take all the kids out to the park or somewhere or he will let me go wherever I want to go . Sometimes that means I end up at my favorite thrift store for some retail therapy or I might go visit with a friend or go get my hair cut or go to the park and go on a walk . He makes sure that I get out and get some time by myself .  Also we have family close by that help out when I have a doctors appointment or something I need to do they will watch the kids for me . My Mom will also take all of them every couple of months and let them stay the night so Matt and I can have some alone time and a date night . Sometimes just a couple hours away from the kids is so refreshing, and I am a better Mom afterwards .


 A friend who has 7 beautiful children once told me that the Lord gives you what you need when you need it . The Lord will give you the patience and the means to care for whatever he has given you .  Children truly are a blessing from the lord . When we were first  married we never truly settled on a number of children we wanted , I think the general consensus was that we would just know when we were done . At the time I thought 3 children was alot . Once we had three children it really didn't seem like alot . We now have 4 and it really doesn't seem like alot to me , even though most people think it's ridiculously huge .  With each child added we just adjusted our life a little , not even so much that we even noticed . When we added our fourth their was pretty much no transition ,  it seemed like he was always here and I really can't remember life without him even though he had only been here 6 months . He was meant to be in our family . Our belief is that  a child is a blessing , and God is not going to give you a child without also giving you the means and capability to care for that child .  With each added child God has given us everything we have needed . We are in better financial shape now that we were before we had our first child . We have hard times but we made it through and learned the lessons that we needed to . In the end God truly makes it all possible . We currently have four, I am content with four, but if the Lord should choose to give us another I would be happy with 5 as well, and the same if we would be blessed with #6 .  We will be fine either way. God truly does make it all possible .

Everytime I hear this song on the radio it reminds me that with God all things are possible , that he can do anything he chooses through me no matter what the circumstances . There is always a lot of praising the Lord going on when this song comes on .

Some More Recipes

Recently a couple of friends of mine asked me to share some recipes that are both yummy and relatively budget friendly. If you know me I am all about cheap, but healthy. So I thought I would share our monthly menu, along with some other cheap recipes / meal ideas.

As you can imagine life with four kids 4 1/2 and under, along with homeschooling two of my kids, housework, and all that goes with being a stay at home Mom I am a busy lady. So here lately my crockpot has been my best friend, especially on Monday's which is Andrew's therapy day. We also eat a lot of simple meals. I have been on a diet recently so I've been trying to eat healthier, and it has been paying off. I have to throw in some unhealthy fattening meals every now and then for my husband who has absolutely no issues with weight. On those nights I usually just add more veggies to my plate. We also do alot of soups.  So here is our rundown for the month. Some of the recipes have links others are typed out.

1. Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese. That's fairly simple and self explanatory.

4. Taco Pizza- This is based off a pizza from my favorite Iowa Pizza Place, Casey's Pizza. Unfortunately they don't exist outside of Iowa and I've yet to find a place in South Carolina that makes one quite as good as Casey's . So I have to make my own every time I get a craving. First of all you make your pizza crust. I use the great value pizza crust mix from Wal-Mart (it's like .44 cents a pack and you will need two packs). Mix up your crust according to package directions. Meanwhile empty a can of refried beans into a bowl and microwave for 1-1 1/2 minutes (I use fat free refried beans). Once the beans are warmed spread on top of crust. In a skillet brown one pound of lean ground beef (I use lean ground turkey). Drain and add in taco seasoning. Put meat on top off the refried beans. Top with cheese (either cheddar or taco blend shredded cheese) Bake for the time that is specified on the crust package. Once the pizza is out of the over top with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, a little more cheese and taco sauce. Cut and enjoy .

8.Pepperoni Pizza Quesadillas and Salad- As simple as it sounds. Take 2 tortillas, spread just a little bit of pizza sauce on one of the tortillas. ( I use Del-Monte Traditional Pasta Sauce for my pizza sauce) Then top with desired ammount of pepperoni and mozzerella cheese. Put in large skillet that has been sprayed with non stick spray. Top with other tortilla, brown each side and then quarter with pizza cutter. This is very filling ( I can barely eat 2 quarters) You of course could add whatever toppings you want. I usually do pepperoni and cheese to please the kiddos.

11. Goulash, Garlic Bread- I know there are many different versions of goulash out there, this is our version. You need to boil 1/2 -3/4 of a 1 pound box of macaroni. In a seperate skillet brown one pound of lean ground turkey. Drain. Once Macaroni is done drain and add in with meat. Add in 1-2 jars of spaghetti sauce (depending on how saucy you like things) and your goulash is done. Sometimes I will add in some green peppers and onions when I'm cooking the meat and it's really good with that in there. As far as the garlic bread goes, I never buy garlic bread. When we have leftover hot dog/ hamburger buns I freeze them. Then when we are having pasta or something I want garlic bread with I thaw the buns. When they are thawed I spread with a little butter and top with garlic salt and put in the oven on broil until they are nice and brown. It's cheap and that way no buns go to waste.

For the potatoes I take out a jar of canned potatoes but for those that don't have canned potatoes you can use any potatoes you want. I quarter then and put them in a bowl. Cut up as many potatoes you think is necessary. Then pour a little olive oil over top of the potatoes and stir. Then season with a little seasoning salt (the same kind of salt that is used with seasoned french fries). Pour into casserole dish and bake until nice and brown and crispy.
For the sweet corn remove the silk and clean. Put in aluminum foil with a little butter and salt and pepper. Roll up individually in aluminum foil. Put on a cookie sheet and bake for about 20 minutes.

13. Baked Chimichangas- You will need 1/2 pound of ground beef or ground turkey, 1 can of fat free refried beans, 1 can of mild enchilada sauce, 2-3 cups of cheddar cheese, 8-10 tortillas. Brown your meat and drain. Add in the refried beans and enchilada sauce and stir and let the mix heat up well. Take a tortilla and put about 2-3 spoonfulls in the middle of the tortilla. Top with cheese and fold up. Place on a cookie sheet with the folded side down. Do this until you are out of either tortillas or meat (usually I have meat leftover). Do not put to much meat in the tortilla or the tortilla will tear. Then bake at 400 for about 15 minutes (they should be somewhat brown by this point but if they are not turn the broil on until they are as brown as you want) Take out of the oven and top with tomatoes, lettuce, salsa and sour cream if desired, or you can just eat it like a baked sandwich. For the extra meat that you may have leftover I will save it and on another night I will take the meat mixture and spread it on top of some english muffins and top with some cheese and bake. Serve with a salad. In a way it's one meal turned into two.

17. Chicken and Black Bean Quesadillas- It's as simple as it sounds. Take 2-3 chicken breast cook them and shred them (or you could use canned chicken if you wanted). Drain and Rinse one can of black beans. Take a toritlla top with chicken, black beans, and desired ammount of shredded cheddar cheese (or whatever cheese you want) Put in  skillet and top with another tortilla. Cook for about 2 minutes on one side (or until slightly browned) and flip. Remove from pan and quarter. I use a 8 pack of tortillas, so that makes 4 quesadillas and that more than feeds us. Usually we have leftovers for my husband to take for lunch the next day or for the kids lunch.

33. Cowboy Dinner- Take 8 hot dogs and cut up and put in 13 by 9 casserole dish. Pour in two cans of hot dog chili and one can of corn drained. Stir together well. Top with cornbread (either from a mix or homemade). Bake according to cornbread directions, until cornbread is done. It usually takes longer than the directions for the cornbread.

34. Chicken Stuffing skillet- Cook 3 chicken breasts and cut up in small pieces. In seperate pot prepare package of stove top stuffing. In skillet with chicken add in jar of mixed vegetables. Add in stuffing and mix. Prepare package of chicken gravy mix and pour on top of chicken stuffing mixture.

Tommarow is the big day!

Well tommorow is the big day that we have been waiting on for what seems like forever . Tommarow morning at approximately 7:30 am this little guy that has been practicing his black belt moves in my belly for the last 9 months will join our family . I can not tell you how excited we are as a family, the kids have been asking for months when the baby is coming out of my tummy . I can't wait to see what he looks like , who he favors the most, how much hair he has and most of all what God has planned for him . I am a true believer in the fact that none of us are here by accident , and each and every one of us has a purpose and was planned by God before the world began .  God has big plans for him, as he does my other children and I love that I get to be a part of it .

Jeremiah 1:5  "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

This has been by far  the easiest pregnancy of all four . Yes I had gestational diabetes for almost the entire pregnancy , but for me that is just part of it . I have had that with every pregnancy so I have learned what I can and can't eat , and how to manage it and it's not really a big deal to me .Other than that it has been a fairly uncomplicated, normal pregnancy .

With my last pregnancy with Andrew the last month or so was a complete nightmare . I had a doctor who didn't care , and told me not to go to the hospital if  I thought something was wrong after I had gone twice and it being nothing . He didn't check on me after my c-section and paid me absolutley not attention to me the two days I was in the hospital or after .  I swelled horribly, to the point I gained 5 pounds of fluid per day a total of almost 60 pounds in water weight by the time the pregnancy was over . I had to practically beg the doctor at 37 weeks to do my c-sections early and I had a 10 pound 6 ounce baby boy . It was quite a scary ordeal, thank the Lord everyone ended up doing just fine . The doctor had delivered my other two children and had been a great doctor through both of my other pregnancies , or so I thought . I still have no idea what happened as to why he suddenly didn't care . With this pregnancy there was no question we were switching doctors . We decided to go with a doctor that a friend highly recommended , Dr. Caroline Felty at Village Center for Women in Greer . I am so glad we did. Talk about a completley different experience , Dr. Felty is so proactive and is so on top of everything. She is genuinely concerned with you, your feelings and how you are doing . I went to the doctor much more often, had several test done that I had never had done before. She couldn't believe that  I had never had a non stress test after 3 c-sections and 3 pregnancies with gestational diabetes . I have learned so much since becoming her patient, such as the insulin regiment that my former doctor had me on was pretty much useless .  It would only keep my blood sugar down for a couple of hours and then it would skyrocket . I would get good blood sugar readings when I tested but it was after that 2 hours that it would go through the roof . He was my doctor and I trusted him , and just did as I was told .  It was almost like he wanted me to have big babies , so I would have to have a c-section . He would make more money that way . So I am so grateful that we chose Dr. Felty . I have stayed pregnant this time longer than I ever have before , I will be 39 weeks tommarow . The longest I have ever been pregnant before this is 38 weeks and 2 days . I always had to be delivered early because of high blood pressure and with my first I had preeclampsia . This time it appears that I will be having a much smaller baby, somewhere around 8-9 pounds.

My one and only concern as far as the c-section is concerned is the anesthesia . The surgery and recovery really doesn't bother me ,  a needle being stuck in my spine however does . When I was having Jackson it took 9 tries to get my spinal in . At the time we didn't know all the back problems that I had , I just knew I was in alot of pain . Finally on the 9th try they were able to get it in place . I have nightmares about having a spinal .  Two months after Jackson was born we found out that I had a ruptured disc , along with two bulging discs and degenerative disc disease in my low back . I had back surgery on February 18th 2010 and it was the best thing I ever did . I got my life back because I couldn't function before my surgery . With Andrew's delivery it took one try and it worked . Please be praying that all goes well , and that it will only take one try this time around .
  We have been so blessed this time around , with a good doctor , a healthy pregnancy , a healthy baby boy and just overall a great experience . I can't wait until tommarow morning . We are all so excited , and can't wait for there to be another member in our family to join in the organized chaos .

Our Monthly Menu

When I was writing out of menu for the month of October/November I had asked friends on Facebook, as well as non facebook friends for different meal ideas because I was coming up with nothing. A few friends gave me ideas, but also wanted to know what I had come up with. At the time I had pretty much nothing planned but I promised that I would share once I got the month figured out.

So here it goes. I ended up buying about 47 days worth of meals, only 45 which were orignally planned. When I got to the store I thought of a couple other easy pop in the oven type meals so we ended up with 47 instead of 45 . I bought extra because I'm currently almost 33 weeks pregnant, and I know next month shopping is the last thing this pregnant Mama is going to want to do just weeks possibly days before D-Day . There are a  lot of crockpot recipes, soups, and simple meals along with some larger meals. I'm trying to make things easy because with all the doctors appointments things are starting to get crazy. 24.Chili and Cinnamon Rolls. The recipe that I use is my Mom's recipes. Anyone that trys it loves it. First brown 1 pound of ground turkey or beef. I use turkey. Add in 1/2 an onion diced, 1 green pepper diced, and about a cup of 1 cup of celery diced. Season with chili powder, salt, pepper and garlic salt. Once meat is done drain and put in large pot. Add in two cans of tomato soup, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, and 2 cans of chili beans. Cook until veggies are done. I do cinnamon rolls with it because growing up my tiny little elementary school always served cinnamon rolls with there chili. Now eating Chili without cinnamon rolls just doesn't seem right.

I let it set out and thaw, then I tenderize it and pour italian dressing overtop and let it marinate in that all day long. 32. Tenderloin Sandwiches, Slow baked Macaroni and Cheese, Green beans. To make tenderloins you will need boneless pork chops. Tenderize until very thin. Then dip meat in egg and then in crushed up ritz or saltine crackers. Fry in a little oil until golden brown on each side. Serve as sandwiches. 33. Baked Pork Chops, Stuffed Baked Potatoes. I just salt, pepper and garlic salt the pork chops and bake for about 10 minutes, flip and bake another 10 minutes or so until done. The baked potatoes I bake for about an hour, then take out the potato part and mix in broccoli and cheese (i use the green giant cheese and broccoli packs) Put back in potato top with shredded cheese and bacon bits.

1 jar of pears, 1 jar of peaches mixed with cherry pie filling

To make my meatloaf first take 2 pounds of ground beef, add in 1 egg, 1 sleeve of crushed saltine crackers, 1/2 cup of onion diced, 1/2 cup of green pepper diced, about 1/2 cup of salsa (maybe a little less, I never measure I just pour.)Mix ingredients with hands. Put in loaf pan or shape into the shape of a loaf and bake at 350 for 1 hour or until done.

37. Blueberry Pancakes, Sausage I use Jiffy Muffin mix to make my blueberry pancakes. There is directions on the back of the box to make pancakes.

38. English Muffin Pizzas. Simple as it sounds, pizzas made on top of english muffins.

Make it stretch, one month at a time part 2

As I said before it usually takes me several days to menu plan , and make a grocery list . This month however didn't take as long for whatever reason . I did inventory , menu planning and my grocery list all in two days . When I went through everything I realized I had quite a bit to work with, but my meat stock was getting low . So instead of buying only one meat a month I ended up buying ground beef , chicken , ground turkey , ground sausage and pork . Still I did pretty good given that I had to buy more than usual . I was able to come up with quite a few meals for the month of August and beginning of September and I really didn't spend a whole lot . I ended up with 36 days worth of meals .
This is how our menu plays out this month . I also included the cost per serving, how many servings , cost for the whole meal, and the amount that I paid minus the veggies , and any other ingredients that I may have already had (just to show how much a garden and using what you have can cut down on meal prices) , and if I can the recipe because I know I'm always looking for new recipes and to show what we eat on such a small food budget . Week 1

I have also heard oatmeal works very well too .

6 . Pepperoni Pizza Quesadilla's , Salad- Cost for the meal : 5.38 What I paid : 0.00 this was leftover from last month's menu . Cost per serving : .57 This usually makes 5 quesadillas that I quarter. It's usually more that enough for us .

Week 2

After all was said and done I ended up with 41 pounds of meat , lot baking necessities like flour , baking powder , pepper , and yeast , a few vegetables , a few house cleaning necessities like windex , fabric softner , tooth paste , deodorant , paper towels , a loaf of bread,  2 cases of poweraide , a gallon of milk , 2 bottles of juice , some cheese , several canned goods , and snacks for my kids .

The total  damage done was :

I will still have to make a couple trips to the store this month for bread , milk and produce . We usually go through about 2 gallons of milk , 1 large bottle of juice and 1-2 loaves of bread a week . It usually ends up to be about 10.00-15.00 or so spent every week . The month's total should be around 250-260 .

This picture doesn't show all of it . There are 2 cases of Poweraide , a gallon of milk , a 6 pack of protein drinks, a 12 pack of diet soda . You also can't see the food piled on the two chairs towards the back . Things were piled up , and the table was full .

I hope this can help others to live more cheaply, and to give you some ideas for meals . It really doesn't cost of fortune to feed a family well, large or small . It just may take a lot of planning and more time to prepare than something you can just pop in the oven or the microwave .

Making it stretch, one month at a time

Over the past year or two I have been asked by several friends and family on how we can afford to buy groceries for our growing family , as well as our two furry children. Most people are shocked to hear how little I spend , and how little I shop . I've even been told it's impossible, to spend that little we must be starving or eating grass . A lot of people ask how I do it , what do you eat, how do menu plan a month at a time . Which is the reason I am writing this blog , to answer those questions .

I use to be a person that just went to the store every week with a vague list and bought whatever sounded good, and usually ended up spending around 300-450 dollars a month  and was just for me and my husband . Half of the stuff I bought didn't get eaten and usually went in the trash before I could use it . A few weeks before our first child was due I quit my job waiting tables . I was just getting to large and it was hard being on my feet for that long everyday . When the money wasn't there to spend that much every month I had to make adjustments . If I wanted to stay home it was time to learn how to do things differently. So I decided to start menu planning , at first it was just a week at a time , then eventually 2 weeks at a time . One month I menu planned for a month at a time and was amazed how much money it saved us . Our grocery bill dropped from 300-450 a month to 150-250 a month . It has stayed about the same ever since, even after adding 3 soon to be 4 children to the family .
In my opinion the reason I'm able to feed my family so cheaply is because :

#1 Menu planning . I don't plan breakfast and lunch , although I do buy things that are suitable for those meals and just kind of wing it . If I know we will be having company on a certain day for lunch I will plan that lunch but just for my family it's just whatever sounds good that day . I mostly plan dinners and desserts . I menu plan for a month at a time .  I do one BIG, usually 3-4 hour grocery trip a month . I usually hit 3 stores : Aldi's , Wal-Mart and Sam's . I know it sounds like a lot but shopping at all three saves us alot of money, especially shopping at aldi's . That alone saves me about 50 dollars or more per trip . Then I do one trip a week for fresh produce , milk and bread . I buy a different meat every month , and I buy in bulk . I buy beef one month , chicken the next , pork the next and fish as needed . My mother in law bought us a Sam's membership a couple of years ago and it saves us alot of money . Especially on meat.

#2 My garden and my canning! I cannot even begin to tell you how much I love gardening and canning . It saves us huge amounts of money every month . We can our own beans , carrotts , corn , cream corn , applesauce , tomatoes , spaghetti sauce , pizza sauce , peaches , pears , sweet potatoes , jellys , jams , tomato soup , potatoes , pear sauce , pickles and the list goes on . I never have to buy veggies and most fruits . The only things that I regularly buy is banana's and sometimes blueberries and strawberries . I also freeze things like squash , zucchini , green peppers , diced onions , shredded potatoes for hashbrowns and many other things .That way I always have it and never need to buy it .

#3 Cooking from scratch saves us a ton of money. I make all of our pancakes, about 25% of our bread, biscuits , cornbread , cookies , and brownies from scratch . I do use a mix for cakes though, just haven't mastered that one yet :) .I will occasionally do frozen biscuits or rolls for a quick addition to breakfast or dinner .

#4 Leftovers save a ton , but I never plan them into my menu . You just never know what will be leftover and when it will happen . So if we have it one night a week is leftover night . If we have leftover soup or meat from a meal it gets frozen and used later .

#5 I do NOT coupon on a regular basis . From my experience most coupons are for processed food that I never use . Why use coupons on things that you won't use . The only reason I might use a coupon is if it was already something I was going to buy , and that coupon would make the brand name item cheaper than the brand that I normally buy anyway .

Preparing for a Grocery Trip

Getting ready for a grocery trip can be a long ordeal . Depending on how motivated I am it can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week . Which isn't easy with 3 little kids , especially when I can only really plan during nap time or when they are in bed at night . I was always start by doing what I call inventory . Meaning I go through what we already have , and make a list of what's in our two refrigerators, deep freeze, and our two pantrys . That way I know exactly what I have on hand. I will look through that list and see what I can make out of what I already have . A lot of the time I can make quite a few meals out of what I already have without spending a dime . Other times I might be lacking an ingredient or two but that's much cheaper than paying for the whole meal . This month I was able to plan these meals without needing to buy anything, or almost nothing :
Goulash, Salad and Garlic bread-the only thing I will have to buy is the sauce . I had the meat on hand, the noodles, and the bread .
Homemade Pizza- I just have to buy yeast to make the crust. I already had the sauce and toppings and this is  on the menu twice this month .
Oatmeal Pancakes- I didn't have to buy anything .
Chimichangas and salad- I just had to buy the refried beans and tortillas. I already had the meat and enchilada sauce and the veggies for the salad .
Homemade Vegetable Beef Soup over brown rice- I just need to buy the meat and the broth .
BLT'S- I will just have to buy or make the bread, and buy the bacon .
BBQ Pork Sandwiches- I had to buy nothing because it was frozen leftovers from another time when we had this for dinner .
Ham and Bean Soup and cornbread- I had to buy nothing . I had the beans , veggies and the ham was leftover from a previous meal .
Potato Soup- I had to buy nothing . It was frozen leftovers from a previous meal .

After I do that , I plan the rest of my meals around what I have . I might only have one ingredient needed , but that's one ingredient I don't need to buy . I buy as little as possible . The routine around here is we have breakfast for dinner once a week a least , one really nice meal with a homemade dessert a week , and Friday's are always pizza night . So I first put that into the equation and then fill in the remaining days with cheap meals , and casseroles . I always try to fill the meals with vegetables from our garden , because that's free . We eat a lot of vegetables with most meals .
I almost always every month use new recipes that I find in cook books , and mostly ones I find online. I just get tired of the same old thing all the time . I usually mix new and old recipes together, and it makes for a menu full of variety .
After the grocery list is made it's time for the hard part, the shopping . Which believe it or not I enjoy because I almost always get to do it by myself . One of the few times where I can go anywhere by myself  :)
